Sheep Breed Pavilion
Discover the Diversity of Sheep
Welcome to the Sheep Breed Pavilion—where tradition, texture, and temperament meet! This exhibit is your chance to get up close with a variety of sheep breeds, each with its own unique history, characteristics, and fleece or hair.
Whether you're a seasoned fiber artist, a curious newcomer, or simply a lover of animals, you'll find something fascinating among our featured breeds. From the fine, crimpy wool of the Romeldale to the long, lustrous locks of the Lincoln, each breed brings something special to the world of fiber—and beyond.
More Than Just Wool:
Sheep play many roles on the farm. In addition to their fleece, some breeds are prized for their flavorful meat or rich milk. Discover the versatility of sheep like the East Friesian, known for its high milk yield, or the Katahdin, a hair breed valued for its tender meat and ease of care. These breeds remind us that sheep are an essential part of sustainable, diversified farming.
Meet the Breeds:
Each pen showcases a different breed, complete with educational signage about their origin, wool type, primary uses, and fun facts. Learn what makes Shetlands so hardy, why Jacob sheep have spots and multiple horns, or how the Icelandic’s dual coat makes it ideal for both warmth and strength.
Wool You Can Feel:
Touch samples of raw and processed fleece to see (and feel!) the difference between fine wool, longwool, and everything in between. Discover how the breed determines the best use—from next-to-skin soft knits to hardwearing rugs.
